What i mean by this is; when i pay for a domain, e.g ( www.ilikepie.com) and i pay for it via credit card through a domain website, where does that money go? who actually owns the internet; deciding what domain points to where?
i was just intrigued, but hopefully someone could shed some light on the matter.
Thanks
Chris
Where does the money for domain hosting go?
Your money goes to the company you use to register your domain name. IE Godaddy.com, Register.com or whatever one you choose to use. That company then gets the domain from ICANN. That company is charged a %26quot;wholesale%26quot; price for the domain, about $6.00 currently, the rest is of course their profit. It would be nice to go directly to ICANN to get your domain but they only sell to companies, not to the public. So you need to go thru a company like godaddy or register.com to get your domain.
The company you use to get your domain will then allow you to host your own website or point it to a hosting company you might have.
One thing to remember is that you never actually own a domain name, they are owned by ICANN but you are allowed to register it and use it for the time that you pay for. If at any time you allow it to expire then it will be returned to ICANN and then be released again to the public so anyone can register it again.
NOTE -
one thing I would avoid is what David P suggested below, that is getting a %26quot;deal%26quot; for your hosting and domain name together. Lots of companies offer you a %26quot;free domain%26quot; when you buy a hosting plan but be careful. I have seen first hand many customers get locked into plans they cant get out of without forfeiting their domain. These so called deals usually have fine print that require you to only host with them, so you would not be able to change hosting later if any problems come up. I have seen some cases where a hosting company will offer free domains and then 6-12 months later they go out of business and the customer loses their domain name. Also situations where they need to run a service that hosting company doesnt offer and need a new host company but they cant point the domain to a new host cause it was provided %26quot;free%26quot; and requires them to use only their hosting.
Remember nothing is every %26quot;free%26quot; and those deals always have cons as well as pros.
And with domains being $8 to $10 a year....pay that little extra and get piece of mind and complete control over the domain name that you paid for.
