Domain name and hosting questions...?

I have a domain name through Register.com. Do I actually %26quot;own%26quot; that name or am I merely %26quot;renting%26quot; it. If I don%26#039;t renew it at any time, it becomes available to the general public, right?

I also built a website through Register.com. Now, I%26#039;d like to have one professionally built. How do I change hosts or have Register.com host my new site and keep the same domain name?

Domain name and hosting questions...?

Yes you can host a website elsewhere if you need more space or services.

Register.com is where your domain, dns/nameservers, and hosting is all located. Technically some companies have other companies behind the scenes hosting it all but I%26#039;ll break it down simple.

DOMAIN:

You can buy a domain from a REGISTRAR which is who you pay yearly for it.

DNS (point to your site):

Then there is DNS and nameserver management (so when you type your domain it goes to your site) which can be handled by the REGISTRAR company (sometimes a third party behind the scenes) or you can personally purchase or obtain for free DNS/nameserver services from another company and manage it yourself. As long as the domain at the REGISTRAR is setup with the third party%26#039;s NAMESERVERS.

HOSTING:

Lastly you have HOSTING which is where all your ftp and website files are stored and displayed to public when the domain name is pointed to it. This can be handled by yet another company.

SUMMARY:

Web hosts may handle all of these for you or you can choose the best companies for price and services separately. If you need more space/services or bandwidth as your site grows you can move to a new HOST and update your DNS to point to it without moving your domain to another company.

REASONING:

Domain transfers can be a pain if you don%26#039;t know what your doing and take several days. It%26#039;s really unnecessary unless you have issues with the company or something. Simply telling your domain to point to a new HOST if you change it only takes within 48hrs or overnight as it propagates through the internet.

CONCLUSION:

The result is multiple bills you have to pay yearly but you get the best service and price you want from each company. Or you can have one bill from one company that handles it all but you may be lacking a feature you need or find yourself paying a higher cost each year than if you picked separately.

you ow it until you stop paying for it. They cant use it. Only you can and or the person after you who pays for it.
